Birth Trauma? What causes that?

Not only does this question pop up often for me as a pediatric chiropractor but this question has come up a lot as well in today’s society. As more and more people are turning to chiropractic care for their whole family as well as their newborn babies more questions are coming to the surface and what we can do to either prevent or help them after.

Lets start this off with a little about chiropractic care for those newborns and infants as there are MANY times misconceptions about what this may even look like. Let me tell you it is NOT like the care of an adult! Unlike the traditional twisting and popping that some may think or are used to, chiropractic care for babies is VERY specific, and gentle especially for newborn infants. Whether you have had a natural birth, or a C-section, it is always important to get your infant checked right after birth so they can grow up to become healthy adults as time during development is crucial!

So the big question... how do birth traumas occur in infants?

  1. Very short labor

  2. Very long labor

  3. The use of Pitocin to strengthen/induce uterine contractions

  4. Restricted maternal birthing positions

  5. Pulling or twisting on the head to deliver the infant’s body

  6. Pain medications

  7. The use of forceps or vacuum extraction

  8. Cesarean delivery

When left uncorrected, this trauma continues to impact a baby’s spinal growth and development, reducing the healthy function of his or her nervous system. Whether immediately or over time, this can cause many health challenges later in life that could easily have been prevented.

Just a few of the symptoms that your infant can experience include, but are not limited too: nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, digestive issues, immune system dysfunction, and an inability to be soothed and settled are all potential signs of spinal nerve stress in infants!

Meet, Teagynn! Teagynn was adjusted after having trouble with crawling. After working with Teagynn for a month or two he began to slowly get the hang of it and before we knew it he was off and doing wonderfully keeping up with all his milestones! His parents know the importance of having a very gentle, and specific adjustment to keep his nervous system functioning at its highest level!!!!!
