Seasonal Allergies | Cultivate Health

Allergy season is upon us! Breathe easy with a holistic approach to your health this year!

Seasonal Allergies

Few things in life are guaranteed, but you can always depend on a Midwest spring to b

ring three things: a welcome reprieve from our harsh winter, a new crop of potholes, and pollen overload. The sneezing, itching, coughing, watery eyes… many of us have been there! Seasonal allergies impact a sizable portion of the population, and this time of the year leaves a lot of us feeling miserable. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. A proactive approach to your health can allow you to enjoy your spring symptom-free. Before you reach for the allergy medication, why not try a holistic approach?

A Holistic Approach to Seasonal Allergies

The typical approach to allergy care (ie: reach for a pill or nasal spray and hope for the best) only treats the symptoms.

Our bodies are amazingly adept at responding to our environmental stimuli- which, at its base level, is what an allergic response is. Your body is responding (and overreacting) to something in its environment that it interprets as a threat. The good news is that when our bodies are functioning optimally, these reactions can be minimized or even reversed. There are a whole host of holistic care options to support your body’s immune system. Here are a few of our favorites.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care doesn’t heal allergies, it simply allows the body to do the work it was designed to do. When your spine is in alignment, the brain and spine can communicate freely without disruption. Chiropractic adjustments release stress on the nervous system, allowing your immune system to function properly. This allows your body to respond appropriately to environmental stimuli, including allergens that might typically send you into a sneezing and wheezing spiral.

Nutrition

You might be surprised by how much of your health is ruled by your gut. Eating a balanced diet rich in healing, gut-friendly foods and avoiding excessive sugar and alcohol can support almost every facet of your health, and even reduce or eliminate your reaction to allergens. A gut-healthy diet includes plenty of fiber (think fruits, vegetables, beans, and legumes), prebiotic and probiotic foods, and plenty of water. It’s always best to get your nutrients from your diet when you can, but supplements are available if you’re not quite hitting your nutrition goals.
