Mindset Matters: Slowing Down and Enjoying the Holidays

Make the most of the holiday season this year! It’s as simple as adjusting your mindset and focusing on joy over stress.

Mindset Matters: Slowing Down and Enjoying the Holidays

The halls are decked, children everywhere are on their best behavior (or trying to be, anyway!), and there's a certain enchantment in the air that invites us to come together. This season, wrapped in twinkling lights and the promise of joy, is beautiful, no doubt. But it can be easy to lose the joy and wonder as we grow up and lose ourselves in the endless hustle and bustle. It’s worth acknowledging the powerful role that mindset plays in shaping our experiences. If you find yourself straddling the line between Christmas cheer and Christmas chaos, this is your friendly invitation to consider your mindset.

Check Your Pace

When the year winds down, calendars tend to fill up. Social events abound in the form of office holiday parties, neighborhood get-togethers, family dinners, ugly Christmas sweater parties, and just about everything in between. If you find yourself stressing over making it to every last social event, consider this your excuse to let yourself off the hook. You don’t actually have to be present at every event you’re invited to.

Make a list (and check it twice) of your holiday social obligations. Ask yourself which of these are truly obligations. Make plans to attend the things you must, and once you’ve got those on your calendar, ask yourself which events contribute to your enjoyment of the season, and then add them to your calendar.

Lastly, ask yourself which events you’re secretly dreading attending. Is your presence required? Will you lose your job or risk damaging a relationship by skipping it? If the answer to those questions is “no,” then feel free to pass this year.

Prioritizing peace and serenity during an already busy season can help you enjoy the time you have with your loved ones. Time is your most valuable resource. Spending it freely and without resentment is the ultimate gift we can give to those we care about.

Embrace Gratitude

A mindset of gratitude serves as a backdrop for holiday bliss. It sounds trite, but instead of obsessing over your stressors or to-do list, take a deep breath and reflect on the blessings that surround you. Gratitude transforms routine tasks into meaningful traditions and fosters a genuine appreciation for the moments we share with loved ones.

Be Flexible

Everyone knows that the holidays rarely unfold exactly as planned, and that's perfectly okay. Have you ever had a holiday mishap that felt disastrous in the moment, but ended up being a hilarious family memory? Embracing flexibility allows us to navigate unforeseen challenges with grace, and makes room for joy even during the rocky times. Whether it's a change in dinner plans or unexpected guests, maintaining an open and adaptable mindset keeps your stress levels low and keeps the door open to holiday cheer.

Stay Present

When chaos reigns, it can be easy to mentally check out. However, the true magic of the season unfolds in the present moment. Mindfulness, or the practice of being fully present, makes our experiences richer and gives our loved ones the gift of our full attention. Put down the phone, savor the flavors of holiday meals, and relish the laughter of loved ones. Years from now, you’ll be glad you took the time to take it all in.

Take Care of Yourself

Self-care is not selfish, it’s necessary for maintaining a positive mindset and keeping up with all of your commitments.
